Pdr Exe Has Stopped Working

Post subject:ShuttleExpress won't run in Cyberlink PD anymore.

A while back, I was able to get my ShuttleExpress to work well with Cyberlink Power Director 14. I'd modified the standard settings to improve control of the software, and used the Options button to connect those modified settings with the application in the programs/Cyberlink folder (PDR.exe). It worked fine.
But recently, I've noted that the ShuttleExpress is not working at all, despite my settings file still being recognized by PDR.exe. Even now, when I hover over the Shuttle symbol in the system tray, it shows 'pdr.exe has the focus.'
I've disconnected and reconnected the Shuttle Express from the computer (noting the tone identifying that it is connected as a USB device). Still not working.
Does anyone have any tips that I should try to get it working again?
All of this has been under Windows 10 64 bit Pro.

Hi Tquinn,
When you click the Shuttle icon, does it say which settings the driver is using? It sounds like the Shuttle driver is recognizing Cyberlink has the focus but it might not be selecting the correct settings for whatever reason.

When I am in Power Director 14, and I click on the Shuttle icon in the system tray, it shows three lines of information:
ShuttleXpress Primary
{checkmark} C-Power Director 14 TAQ Mods
Open Control Panel
The phrase 'C-Power Director 14 TAQ Mods' refers to my custom definitions.
I also just checked, and the ShuttleXpress will run in other programs. I just opened a Microsoft Word file and the definitions were WinWord.exe. The Shuttle even works as I'm typing up this message, using Microsoft Internet Explorer definitions.
So there seems to only be having trouble with the Power Director software.
I just did a control-alt-delete and went to the Windows Task Manager, highlighted the Power Director 14 'App,' and looked at its properties which show the application to be PDR.exe which is what the ShuttleXpress has for its target application. But ShuttleXpress is dead with just that application. And it used to work with it just fine.
Very weird.

Hi Terry,
That is very strange. Has anything changed on your computer recently? For example, did you recently update to Windows 10? Also, which version number of the Shuttle driver do you have installed? Lastly, I would maybe try recreating your settings, to see if that makes a difference.
- First, highlight the current settings to be copied in the application setting field.
- Then click Options > Create New Settings > Copy contents from current settings.
- Then choose the Cyberlink PD executable file in the file selector pop up.

First, thanks for helping me. I tried calling the Contour help line, and it just refers me to this forum, so this is my only hope.
I've not changed the operating system (Windows 10 Pro 64) during the period of time where the Shuttle worked fine with my definitions, through the recent time when it stopped working. I suppose it is possible that a Windows update occurred (since you cannot control those anymore), and I know Windows updates have occurred since I've last used the shuttle with this software successfully.
I also have tried a more 'generic' version of the definitions for Cyberlink PD version 13, which I have used successfully with PD 14. That does not work now either. So I don't think it is my specific custom definitions.
So it seems to be a problem with Cyberlink PowerDirector only (at least in my experience), which is ironic, because that is the only thing I happen to use the shuttle for.
Another possibility is that Cyberlink updated the software, and I haven't checked their websites to see if this problem is widespread. I will check that.
As for the Shuttle Driver, I just went to the Device Manager in Windows, opened every device on that screen, and cannot find anything for Contour or Shuttle Express. I don't think it is missing, or the shuttle would not work at all, and it does work even as I type this in Internet Explorer. It just doesn't work for the Power Director software.
So if you can tell me where I should look for the installed driver is, I'll get that information back to here.

Hi Terry,
Did you try recreating the settings with the instructions I posted in my last message? If there was an update, this should make it work again. Often times when there is an update, the executable identifiers that the drivers uses change within the program. Using the steps I outlined earlier creates new settings, using your current shortcuts, to target the new executable file. If you didn't try it, please give it a try.

I just tried that, and it did not work.
First, I took my modified version of the settings and followed your instructions:
Opened the control panel, highlighted my modified settings, clicked on the Options button, hovered over 'Create New Settings,' then clicked on 'Copy contents from Current Settings.' Using this did not change the behavior . . . nothing I do with the shuttle is reflected in any action in the Power Director Software.
There are now 4 settings that are listed when I open the Control Panel, with a check mark alongside of them. All are some form of settings specific to Power Director. I've tried changing the check mark to each of the four, and none of these four work in Power Director.
Is it normal when you first open the Control Panel that 'Global Settings' are always on display in the dropdown list, even when I'm in a specific program like Power Director?
I did test that Power Director itself is responsive to keyboard inputs (without using Shuttle/Express). For example, clicking space bar will start and stop playback of the video, and clicking Home will move cursor to the start of the clip. 'Home' is programmed into the Button 1 on the Shuttle. If I click it, it does nothing (should move cursor to the start of the clip).
And yet, the shuttle does still work in other applications, just not Cyberlink.

As it is weekend I will jump in with a few notes.

Did you select the correct Cyberlink exe file in the explorer window ???? This is critical.
Please do the following, while Cyberlink is running start the task manager and make a note of the process name. Then point the mouse on the image name and use the context menu (right click) to 'Open File location'. Make a note of the location and use this as the target application for the Shuttle.

This is normal but it also shows that you do not understand how it works. The control panel is used to manage application settings and is not involved in the workings of the shuttle. The shuttle driver gets informed which application is active and uses this information to find the application settings to be used.
Find the Shuttle icon on the taskbar and place your mouse pointer on the icon.(DO NOT PRESS ANY BUTTONS). A popup text will show which application has the focus. Next click on the icon with the left mouse button and a menu opens showing you the name of application settings are being used. Now open Cyberlink and make sure that the Cyberlink window is active. Move the mouse to the Shuttle icon and make a note of the name of the application has the focus. Now click on the Shuttle icon and make a note of the name of the application settings.
If the last step above says 'Global Settings' then you are missing the application settings for this particular application path. The simplest correction is to change the target application in the shuttle control panel for the Cyberlink application settings, you can use the task manager to find the correct path of the exe file.

To your FIRST QUESTION, I am certain that I am connected to the Cyberlink Power Director 14 with the Shuttle engine. When I am in PowerDirector14, and if I hover over the shuttle icon in the system tray, the message that pops up is 'Pdr.exe has the focus.'
PDR.EXE is the application file for Cyblerlinke PD14, found in the C:program filesCyberlinkPowerDirector14 folder. If I double click that file, it starts up PowerDirector14. PDR.EXE is also the target application (in the same folder just described) of the shortcut that I use to start Power Director 14.
To your SECOND QUESTION: settings are shown, with one checked. Global Settings is not one of them. All four relate to Cyberlink Power Director. Two of them are named:
PowerDirector
C-PowerDirector13
Both of these came with the default set of settings that came with my Shuttle Express when I went to the dropdown list in the Control Panel.
The other two are ones that I modified from C-PowerDirector13. Their names are the following:
C-PowerDirector 14 TAQ mods
C-PowerDir 14 TQ mods vB
The first of these are ones that I built last year. The second one was created a day or two ago when it was suggested that I rebuild the settings, so I copied ' C-PowerDirector 14 TAQ mods' into a new settings file, and then renamed it ' C-PowerDir 14 TQ mods vB'
No matter which of these four files I select (and leave them checked), the shuttle will not work now in Power Director 14. The first three of them worked perfectly approximately a month ago when I last did some editing. Within the intervening period, I did nothing to update either Cyberlink or ShuttleXpress.
I just checked the Windows 10 update history, and there were several updates on January 11, 2017 (KB3214628) (KB890830) (KB3213986), and one on January 26, 2017 (KB3211320).
I tried to go back to an earlier build, but Windows does not allow going to an earlier build after 10 days, which just happens to be today.
But it makes me wonder if the Windows update did something that caused ShuttleXpress to no longer work on certain applications.
I hate being on the 'bleeding edge' of problems.
